And I can bear anything, even this.

When we hit our lowest point, we are open to the greatest change.

#as much as i adore aang’s beauty #this is not how to do writing#so she just became a fully realized avatar without doing anything to earn it#besides feeling sad about her bending? #no that’s bullshit #look at all the shit aang went through to get to that point #he had to explicitly deal with every emotional block #he had to give up katara #and he had to believe so strongly in his convictions to the point where he overpowered all the past avatars #he gained the power of energybending because he had a pure heart and didn’t want to take someone’s life #he went through a whole god damn process #this just felt so cheap #and korra deserves a better story than this

Uggggghhhh. It’s not that I even object to the basic idea that losing her bending could be the thing that winds up leading to her becoming a fully-realised Avatar, but it just sort of… happened. Like, “Oh no, your bending is gone, how completely terrible HA HA JK PSYCH here it is with extra bonus spiritual Avatar powers.”

Imagine if she’d lost her bending early in the series. Imagine if she’d actually had to learn to live without it; to live without her conception of herself as A Powerful Bender; to find new strengths to rely on; to learn that there’s more to life than that, and that there’s more to her. Imagine if she’d actually had to experience life as a non-bender, and come to understand them and the grievances they have!!! THAT would have been the ~openness to change~ that Aang was talking about. THAT would have helped her find her spiritual centre. THAT I can buy leading to a spiritual breakthrough - when Korra learns to believe in herself and not just her bending prowess, when she comes to realise that there’s more to being the Avatar than just having power over all four elements, and when she grows to understand that she’s everyone’s Avatar, that she stands for everyone, benders and non-benders alike.

I mean, a huge part of the last series, and of Aang’s path to becoming a fully-realised Avatar, was experiencing the variety of life all across the remaining nations, learning about who they are as people and where they’re coming from, and learning about the essential natures and philosophies of the other three elements. The LOGICAL NEXT STEP from a storytelling POV would be to have the new Avatar learn what it’s like to be a non-bender, because that too is a necessary perspective in bringing balance to the world.

I didn’t know I would get feels from these two. I wasn’t prepared.
